PTA Issues Strict W@rning on Buying and Selling Foreign SIM Cards With Big Fines and Jails

by Mahnoor Arif

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strong public warning: buying or selling foreign SIM cards in Pakistan is completely illegal. On June 1, 2026, the authority reminded citizens that such activities are punishable under the law and can lead to serious consequences.

According to the PTA advisory, anyone involved in the trade, purchase, or use of foreign or smuggled SIM cards may face heavy fines and jail time. Penalties can include up to three years in prison and fines reaching up to PKR 2 million for individuals. The regulator has stressed that these SIMs are often used for illegal purposes and cannot be properly monitored.

Foreign SIM cards are popular among some people for cheaper international calls or to avoid local verification rules. However, PTA says they pose serious security risks, including fraud, data theft, and support for criminal activities. The authority has carried out several raids with the FIA in cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Multan, seizing thousands of illegal SIMs and arresting suspects.

PTA strongly advises people to use only registered local SIM cards issued through proper biometric verification. Citizens should report any sale of foreign SIMs immediately. Using legal SIMs helps protect national security and personal safety.

This strict action shows the government’s commitment to stopping illegal telecom practices. People are urged to follow the rules to avoid trouble with the law.
