Pakistan Set for In-Flight Connectivity as PTA Drafts New Satellite Telecom Licence

by Mahnoor Arif

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken a major step to bring modern in-flight internet and mobile services to Pakistani skies. On May 6, 2026, the PTA released a draft licence framework for In-Flight Telecommunication Satellite (ITS) Services. This will allow passengers to use high-speed internet and make calls during flights.

Under the new plan, licensed operators can set up in-flight connectivity systems using satellite technology. Services will only work when the aircraft flies above 3,000 meters to avoid any interference with ground networks and ensure flight safety. The system will connect with local telecom companies and approved satellite providers for smooth service.

This facility will let passengers browse the web, check emails, use social media, and stay connected with family while travelling. It is expected to improve the overall flying experience, especially on long international flights. Airlines will be able to offer better entertainment and productivity options to their customers.

The move aligns Pakistan with global standards. Many countries already provide in-flight Wi-Fi on major airlines. Once finalised, this licence will encourage local and international companies to invest in the technology. The PTA has invited feedback from stakeholders until May 31, 2026.
