MDCAT Registrations Drop Sharply to135,000 Down From 2000,000+

Registrations for Pakistan’s Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) have dropped sharply this year, with around 135,000 students registered so far compared to more than 200,000 applicants in 2022. The decline has raised concerns among educators, policymakers, and medical institutions about changing trends in medical education.

The MDCAT is the mandatory entrance exam for students seeking admission to public and private medical and dental colleges across Pakistan. Every year, thousands of students compete for a limited number of seats, making it one of the country’s most competitive examinations.

According to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), approximately 135,000 students have registered for MDCAT 2026 so far. Authorities have extended the registration deadline, meaning the final number of applicants may increase before registrations close. The examination is scheduled to be held on August 16, 2026.

Experts believe several factors may be contributing to the decline in registrations. Rising tuition fees, increasing competition, changing admission policies, and the growing popularity of alternative careers in healthcare, technology, and other professional fields are among the possible reasons being discussed. Some students are also choosing to pursue higher education abroad.

The lower number of applicants may affect admission trends, particularly at private medical colleges. However, competition for seats at leading public medical institutions is expected to remain strong because of their limited capacity and comparatively lower tuition costs.

Education experts stress that students should remain focused on their preparation rather than the number of candidates. Strong academic knowledge, regular practice, and effective time management remain the keys to success in the MDCAT.

While registrations have fallen compared to previous years, the MDCAT continues to play a vital role in Pakistan’s medical education system. Officials are expected to review the reasons behind the decline and consider whether future policy changes are needed to encourage more students to pursue careers in medicine.
