Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has taken a major step toward modernizing its fleet, with plans to acquire 16 new Boeing aircraft as part of a broader strategy to strengthen operations and improve passenger services.
The development follows high-level discussions between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, PIA’s new management, and senior Boeing officials at the company’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, both sides reviewed aircraft acquisition options and explored commercial arrangements to secure the most suitable deal for the national carrier. Significant progress was reported, with both parties agreeing to work toward finalizing the agreement as soon as possible.
The proposed purchase of 16 Boeing aircraft is expected to become a key part of PIA’s fleet modernization programme. The airline aims to replace old aircraft, improve operational efficiency, and expand its capacity on domestic and international routes. A modern fleet is also expected to reduce maintenance costs, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
During the visit, Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson assured Pakistan of the company’s full cooperation in accelerating the procurement process. Mohsin Naqvi praised Boeing’s leadership in the global aviation industry and expressed optimism that the partnership would help strengthen PIA’s future growth plans.
The fleet expansion comes as PIA continues efforts to rebuild its international presence and improve service standards. Industry experts believe that adding newer aircraft will allow the airline to operate more efficiently, introduce additional routes, and compete more effectively with regional carriers.
If the agreement is finalized, the acquisition of 16 Boeing aircraft will mark one of the biggest fleet upgrades in PIA’s recent history, supporting the airline’s long-term vision of becoming a stronger, more competitive, and customer-focused national carrier.
