ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has achieved a historic milestone after the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) officially confirmed that the national men’s football team will participate in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, marking the country’s first-ever appearance in the prestigious FIFA-organized tournament.
The tournament is scheduled to take place in Indonesia from September 21 to October 6, 2026, and is part of FIFA’s initiative to provide more international competitive opportunities for emerging football nations. Pakistan accepted FIFA’s invitation, making it one of the few non-ASEAN teams to feature in the competition.
According to the PFF, Pakistan will compete alongside strong footballing nations including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and India, giving the Shaheens an opportunity to test themselves against quality international opposition.
The historic invitation is seen as a major boost for Pakistan football, which has shown signs of progress in recent years. Officials believe participation in the FIFA ASEAN Cup will help improve the team’s international exposure, raise playing standards, and provide valuable experience for the players ahead of future continental competitions.
Football fans across the country have welcomed the announcement, describing it as another significant step forward for the sport. The competition is expected to feature high-intensity matches and offer Pakistan a platform to showcase its talent on a larger international stage.
With its place now confirmed, Pakistan is preparing to make history when it kicks off its campaign later this year. The FIFA ASEAN Cup marks a new chapter for the national team and reflects the growing recognition of Pakistan football on the international stage.
