US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, describing Pakistan as a “great country” and the Pakistani premier as a “terrific man.”
Speaking before world leaders on Tuesday, Trump highlighted his administration’s diplomatic efforts over the past year and discussed several international conflicts. He specifically mentioned the military escalation between Pakistan and India in May 2025, saying his administration had played a role in helping bring the confrontation to an end.
Trump said he had developed close relationships with leaders of countries involved in conflicts and claimed that these relationships helped facilitate settlements. He listed Pakistan and India among several disputes he said had been addressed during his presidency.
While discussing Pakistan, Trump referred to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as a “terrific man.” He also said the Pakistani leader had credited him with helping save 30 million lives, adding that the number could be even higher.
Trump has previously spoken positively about Pakistan’s leadership and credited his administration with helping prevent further escalation between Pakistan and India. Pakistani officials have also publicly acknowledged the US role in supporting the ceasefire.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was in New York to participate in the UNGA session, where he is scheduled to address the 193-member UN General Assembly on September 25.
Trump’s remarks placed Pakistan among the countries he highlighted while outlining his administration’s foreign-policy engagements. His comments also drew attention to the continuing diplomatic engagement between Washington and Islamabad.
The address comes as Pakistan and the United States continue discussions on regional security, trade and broader bilateral cooperation.
