PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has stated that the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill aims to strengthen Pakistan’s democratic foundations and fulfill the long-standing commitments of the Charter of Democracy.

Speaking ahead of the clause-by-clause voting in the National Assembly, Bilawal explained that the amendment seeks to provide constitutional protection to the rank of Field Marshal under Article 243 — a position that would be formally recognized through the prime minister’s decision following India’s defeat in past conflicts.

He further noted that the amendment includes the establishment of constitutional courts, marking a significant step toward improving judicial efficiency and ensuring constitutional balance within state institutions.

The proposed changes also introduce structural reforms in the country’s defence framework to ensure greater coordination and accountability.

The bill was presented by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar during a key parliamentary session attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif.

Bilawal emphasized that the goal of the amendment is not political but institutional, to preserve stability, recognize historic military contributions, and ensure that democratic and defence institutions operate within constitutional parameters.

As debates continue in Parliament, the 27th Amendment stands as one of the most consequential reform packages in recent years, shaping the future relationship between Pakistan’s civil and military institutions.
