101-Year-Old Man Regains Sight After Rare Cataract Surgery in Rawalpindi

In a remarkable medical achievement, surgeons at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi have successfully restored the vision of a 101-year-old man after performing a rare and high-risk cataract surgery. The patient, Raza Khan, a resident of Islamabad, had been suffering from dense cataracts along with age-related macular degeneration, a condition that often limits visual recovery.

Due to his advanced age and fragile eye condition, several eye specialists in Islamabad and Rawalpindi had earlier refused to operate, calling the case too risky. However, the surgical team at Al Shifa Trust decided to take on the challenge, offering the patient a chance to regain his sight.

The delicate procedure was led by senior ophthalmologist Dr Sabeehuddin and his team. They used advanced surgical tools and special protective gels to prevent damage to the fragile eye tissues, which is especially important in elderly patients. Extra care was taken throughout the surgery to reduce complications and ensure the best possible outcome.

The operation was successful, and Raza Khan experienced a noticeable improvement in vision, bringing joy and relief to his family. The surgery also held emotional value for the hospital, as Mr Khan was a close friend of the late Lieutenant General Jahan Dad Khan, the founder of Al Shifa Trust.

Family members shared that regaining vision at such an age felt nothing short of a miracle. Doctors at the hospital said the case shows that age alone should not be a barrier to treatment if proper expertise and technology are available.

The successful surgery highlights Al Shifa Trust’s commitment to providing advanced eye care, even in the most challenging cases, and offers hope to elderly patients facing similar conditions.
