Pakistanis Spend 63% of Income on Food and Housing Due to Rising Living Costs, Survey

A new government survey has revealed the growing financial pressure faced by Pakistani households as living costs continue to rise. According to the Household Integrated Economic Survey 2024–25, families across the country now spend nearly 63 percent of their total income on basic needs, mainly food and housing.

The survey shows that food expenses alone take up around 37 percent of household income. Rising prices of essential items such as flour, cooking oil, vegetables, and pulses have made it harder for families to manage daily meals. Housing related costs, including rent, electricity, and gas, account for another 26 percent, reflecting higher utility bills and increased housing expenses in both urban and rural areas.

Experts link this trend to persistent inflation, currency depreciation, and economic reforms introduced under IMF related programs. While these measures aim to stabilize the economy, they have also led to higher prices and reduced purchasing power for ordinary citizens. As a result, incomes are not keeping pace with rising expenses.

One of the most concerning findings of the survey is the sharp decline in spending on education. With limited income left after meeting basic needs, households now spend only 2.5 percent on education. Analysts warn that this could have long term effects on human development and future economic growth.

The survey also notes a growing dependence on foreign remittances and financial support from relatives, especially among middle and lower income families. Many households rely on external help to cover basic expenses.

Overall, the findings highlight the urgent need for targeted relief measures, income support programs, and policies that can ease the cost of living burden on Pakistani families.
