Rao Abdul Kareem has officially been appointed as the new Punjab Police Chief, following a major federal reshuffle in which Dr Usman Anwar was named Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). The move marks a key leadership change in Pakistan’s largest provincial police force.
Rao Abdul Kareem hails from Nawabshah and has a long and distinguished career in law enforcement. He joined the police service in 1996 and has held several important positions, including DIG Traffic Punjab, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Gujranwala, and District Police Officer (DPO) in multiple districts. His experience across different roles is expected to bring a strong mix of operational expertise and administrative efficiency to the Punjab Police.
The Punjab Police expressed confidence that under Kareem’s leadership, law and order will be strengthened and public safety enhanced across the province. Officials highlighted his record of service, dedication, and ability to handle complex policing challenges as key reasons for his appointment.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised Dr Usman Anwar for his contributions during his tenure as Punjab Police Chief and wished him success in his new role at the FIA. The reshuffle is part of ongoing efforts by the federal and provincial governments to improve efficiency, coordination, and public trust in law enforcement agencies.
As Punjab faces growing urban and rural security challenges, Rao Abdul Kareem’s leadership is expected to focus on crime prevention, traffic management, community policing, and quick response measures. Observers note that his extensive experience at both district and provincial levels positions him well to strengthen the police force while maintaining public confidence and ensuring the safety of citizens.
