Digital Platforms Generate 92% of Retail Payments in Pakistan: State Bank of Pakistan

by Mahnoor Arif

State Bank of Pakistan has reported a strong rise in digital payments, showing that 92% of retail transactions in Pakistan are now made through digital channels. This is an increase from 88% last year, reflecting a fast shift toward a cashless system.

Between October and December 2025, around 3.4 billion retail transactions were recorded, with a total value of Rs167 trillion. Out of these, nearly 3.1 billion payments were completed using digital methods. This shows how quickly people are moving away from cash and adopting modern payment options.

Mobile banking apps played the biggest role in this growth, making up about 83% of all digital transactions. Many users now prefer mobile apps for paying bills, sending money, and online shopping due to ease and speed. At the same time, internet banking and systems like Raast Instant Payment System have also expanded, making transfers quicker and more secure.

Other services such as debit and credit cards, ATMs, and branchless banking are also growing. These options are helping people in both urban and rural areas access financial services more easily.

This trend will continue as smartphone use increases and digital awareness improves. The move toward digital payments is expected to make the economy more transparent, efficient, and accessible for everyone.
