Ireland Becomes First European Country to Pass a Law Banning Imports from Isr-ael

by Hameed

Ireland has made history by becoming the first European country to ban the import and trade of goods produced in Israeli settlements located in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. This move follows a recent advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), issued on July 19, 2024, which declared these settlements illegal under international law.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris introduced the bill, saying it reflects Ireland’s strong commitment to human rights and support for a peaceful two-state solution. He made it clear that the law targets goods from illegal settlements, not from Israel itself.

Under the proposed law, it will be a criminal offense to import these goods, based on Ireland’s Customs Act 2015. The government will identify products linked to settlements using postal codes already recognized by the European Union.

Harris emphasized that this step is about taking responsibility and standing up for international law. He also expressed hope that other nations will be encouraged to take similar actions in defense of justice and fairness.

With this bold move, Ireland strengthens its role as a leading voice for Palestinian rights in Europe and sends a clear message about the importance of accountability in international trade.
