Flood Warnings Issued for Ravi & Sutlej Rivers as Monsoon Death Toll Approaches 800

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued new flood alerts as heavy monsoon rains continue to affect large parts of the country. Officials have warned that rivers and low-lying areas are at growing risk of flooding, and emergency preparations are being made across Punjab.

According to the NDMA, the River Ravi faces a medium-level flood threat over the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, the Sutlej River has already reached a high flood level, creating serious danger for nearby towns and villages. Authorities say the situation is being closely monitored, with rescue teams and relief equipment placed on standby.

Several districts of Punjab, including Lahore, Multan, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, and Dera Ghazi Khan, have been placed on high alert. Residents living in flood-prone areas have been urged to stay indoors whenever possible, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep emergency supplies ready. Families have also been advised to secure important documents and valuables in case of sudden evacuations.

This year’s monsoon season has been particularly destructive. Since late June, nearly 800 lives have been lost due to heavy rains, flash floods, and related accidents. Officials report that August has been the deadliest month so far, with widespread damage to homes, roads, and farmland.

Relief operations are ongoing, with government agencies and volunteers working to provide food, water, and shelter to displaced families. The NDMA has appealed to the public to follow safety guidelines and cooperate with local authorities, warning that the situation may worsen if rainfall continues in the coming days.
