Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has raised serious concerns over major delays in the city’s Green and Red Line mass transit projects. Speaking about the ongoing issues, he warned that at the current pace of work, these projects might not be completed before 2035.
The mayor criticized the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL) for failing to provide clear and reliable timelines. He pointed out that the Red Line project, which was launched in 2022 with significant international funding, is still incomplete.
The lack of transparency and progress has left citizens frustrated and concerned about when the projects will finally become operational.
Wahab also highlighted the difficulties faced by residents due to ongoing construction. Damaged roads, traffic disruptions, and poor coordination between authorities have made commuting and daily life increasingly difficult for people in affected areas.
He emphasized that local leadership should be involved in every phase of these large-scale development projects to ensure better planning, supervision, and accountability.
Despite the challenges, the mayor reassured citizens that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is committed to protecting public interests. He stressed that infrastructure development should not compromise the city’s existing facilities or create additional hardships for residents.
Officials are urged to speed up construction, maintain clear communication with the public, and coordinate effectively among agencies. The mayor’s statements reflect the need for urgent action and accountability to ensure that Karachi’s mass transit system becomes a functional and efficient solution for the city’s growing transportation needs.
With proper oversight and cooperation, the Green and Red Line projects could still fulfill their promise of modernizing public transport and improving the lives of Karachi’s residents.
