Pakistan’s First Women Governor of the State Bank, Dr Shamshad Akhtar Passes Away

Dr Shamshad Akhtar, Pakistan’s first woman Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and a respected figure in the country’s economic leadership, passed away at the age of 71 following a cardiac arrest. Her death has been widely described as a major national loss.

At the time of her passing, Dr Akhtar was serving as chairperson of the Pakistan Stock Exchange, a role that reflected the trust placed in her judgment and experience. Her career was rare in its breadth, spanning monetary policy, fiscal management, and capital markets at the highest levels.

Dr Shamshad Akhtar made history when she became the first woman to lead the State Bank of Pakistan. During her tenure, she was known for her strong stance on financial discipline, transparency, and institutional independence. She later served twice as caretaker federal finance minister during critical political transitions, where she was praised for steady handling of economic challenges.

Beyond national roles, Dr Akhtar also represented Pakistan in international financial institutions, earning respect for her professionalism and clear economic thinking. In recognition of her lifelong services to the country, she was awarded the Nishan e Imtiaz in 2024.

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over her passing, calling her an asset to the nation. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb also paid tribute, highlighting her integrity, competence, and dedication to public service.

Dr Shamshad Akhtar’s passing marks the end of an era for Pakistan’s economic institutions. She leaves behind a legacy of trailblazing leadership, principled decision making, and inspiration for women aspiring to lead in finance and governance.
