Saudi Arabia to Add 900,000 New Prayer Spaces Near Makkah Grand Mosque

by Mahnoor Arif

Saudi Arabia has unveiled an ambitious new project that will transform the area around Makkah’s Grand Mosque.

The ‘King Salman Gate’ project is set to add approximately 900,000 prayer spaces, both indoor and outdoor, to accommodate the millions of worshippers who visit the holy city each year.

This massive development spans an incredible 12 million square meters and aims to do much more than just add prayer areas. The project will significantly improve access to the Grand Mosque and enhance the overall experience for pilgrims.

It’s not just about religion either, the development will include residential buildings, commercial spaces, hotels, and cultural facilities, creating a complete modern district around one of Islam’s holiest sites.

What’s particularly interesting is the project’s commitment to preserving history. Around 19,000 square meters of heritage sites will be carefully restored, ensuring that Makkah’s rich past isn’t forgotten in the rush toward modernization. The development will also connect seamlessly with public transportation networks, making it easier for visitors to move around.

The economic impact could be huge. Officials estimate the project will create over 300,000 jobs by 2036, providing employment opportunities for thousands of people. This initiative is a key part of Saudi Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s ambitious plan for economic transformation and urban development.

Construction timelines and completion dates are yet to be announced.
