Pakistan has approved a Rs 12 billion modernization plan to upgrade the Gaddani Ship Recycling Yard and establish the country’s first Green Ship Repair and Recycling Yard at Port Qasim. The initiative marks a significant step in revitalizing the country’s maritime and industrial sectors.

The project aims to bring Pakistan’s ship recycling industry in line with global environmental and safety standards, ensuring eco-friendly operations and sustainable growth. This modernization effort will also contribute to the revival of Pakistan Steel Mills, as the recycled steel can be utilized to support domestic steel production and industrial projects.

In addition to infrastructure development, the government announced plans to expand the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) fleet to 30 ships by 2026, strengthening the nation’s maritime logistics and trade capacity.

The new policies being developed for fisheries, shipping, and maritime education are also expected to create more job opportunities and enhance professional training within the sector. By investing in modern facilities and skill development, Pakistan aims to position itself as a competitive player in the global blue economy.

Officials noted that this initiative would not only generate revenue and employment but also promote environmentally responsible industrial practices, aligning with international sustainability goals.

The modernization of Gaddani and the new Green Yard at Port Qasim are seen as key milestones toward building a stronger, cleaner, and future-ready maritime industry for Pakistan.
