Islamabad International Airport to Launch Its First Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station

by Mahnoor Arif

Islamabad International Airport is set to introduce its first Electric Vehicle charging station as part of a new multi purpose fuel and service facility, marking a step toward cleaner transport infrastructure in the capital.

According to official details, the planned facility will not only include EV charging points but also a conventional petrol pump to cater to both electric and fuel powered vehicles. In addition, the site will feature a tuck shop, lube shop, tyre shop, and a restaurant, offering a complete service area for travelers, airport staff, and transport operators.

The project is aimed at improving passenger convenience while supporting the gradual shift toward electric vehicles in Pakistan. With EV adoption slowly increasing, the availability of charging infrastructure at a major transport hub like Islamabad International Airport is seen as a timely move.

Lease rights for the facility will be offered to licensed oil marketing companies. The bidding process is scheduled to take place on February 4, 2026. Officials say the lease will be awarded initially for a period of 30 years, with the option to extend it by another 20 years through mutual agreement.

Authorities believe the long lease period will encourage serious investment in modern equipment and quality services. The inclusion of EV chargers alongside traditional fuel services reflects a mixed use approach, allowing flexibility as vehicle trends evolve over time.

This development aligns with broader government efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions and modernize public infrastructure. Once operational, the EV charging station is expected to benefit airport users, ride hailing services, and future EV owners, while also setting an example for similar facilities at other airports across the country.
