Govt Announces Feb 5 Public Holiday for Kashmir Solidarity Day

by Mahnoor Arif

The federal government of Pakistan has announced February 5, 2026, as a public holiday across the country to mark Kashmir Solidarity Day. The decision aims to reaffirm Pakistan’s political and moral support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

As part of the observance, a one minute silence will be held at 10 a.m. nationwide to honor the sacrifices of Kashmiri martyrs. Government offices, educational institutions, and most private businesses will remain closed. The Pakistan Stock Exchange has also confirmed that trading activities will be suspended for the day.

Kashmir Solidarity Day has been observed annually since the early 1990s. It is marked by rallies, seminars, peace marches, and candlelight vigils across Pakistan and in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. These events are organized by political parties, civil society groups, and educational institutions to highlight the long standing Kashmir dispute and the humanitarian situation in the region.

Official statements issued ahead of the day emphasize Pakistan’s continued backing of the Kashmiri people’s right to self determination. The government has once again called for the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, including a UN supervised plebiscite to allow Kashmiris to decide their future.

Speakers at planned events are expected to focus on alleged human rights violations in the region and urge the international community to play a more active role in resolving the dispute. Media outlets will also air special programs, documentaries, and discussions related to Kashmir throughout the day.

The observance reflects Pakistan’s position that lasting peace in South Asia is not possible without a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue.
