KPK to Launch its First Robotic Surgeries at Kidney Institute in Hayatabad Medical Complex

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is preparing to enter a new phase in healthcare as the Institute of Kidney Diseases at Hayatabad Medical Complex plans to launch the province’s first robotic surgery services. The initiative marks a significant development in advanced medical care in the region.

The move follows a live surgical workshop where visiting surgeons from the United Kingdom carried out two robotic procedures. The session demonstrated how robotic systems assist surgeons in performing minimally invasive operations with greater accuracy and control. Hospital officials described the event as a practical step toward adopting the technology permanently.

IKD has formally proposed the purchase of a surgical robot, estimated to cost around one million dollars. Alongside the equipment, the institute plans to train local surgeons, nurses, and technical staff to operate and manage the system independently. This training component is considered essential for ensuring long term sustainability of the program.

Robotic surgery allows doctors to perform complex procedures through small incisions, using robotic arms controlled from a console. The approach typically results in reduced blood loss, lower risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times. It is widely used for urological procedures, tumour removal, and certain transplant related operations.

Officials believe the introduction of robotic surgery will strengthen specialized care in the province and reduce the need for patients to travel to other cities or abroad for advanced treatment.
