Proud of Pakistan! Malala Portrait Unveiled At Oxford University

by Mahnoor Arif

Oxford University has unveiled a portrait of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai at Lady Margaret Hall, celebrating her global efforts for girls’ education and human rights. The tribute places her among a select group of distinguished figures honored by the college.

With this recognition, Malala becomes the second Pakistani woman to be featured at Lady Margaret Hall, after former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The connection is symbolic, as both women studied at Oxford and went on to represent Pakistan on major international platforms. Malala has often spoken about Benazir Bhutto as a source of inspiration in her own journey.

The portrait was painted by British artist Isabella Watling, known for capturing contemporary figures in thoughtful and personal settings. The artwork reflects Malala’s strength and calm determination, highlighting her transformation from a young education activist in Swat to a global voice for change.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by Malala’s family, students, faculty members, and guests. During the event, she spoke about the importance of access to education, especially for girls facing conflict, poverty, and discrimination. She emphasized that education remains one of the most powerful tools for equality and social progress.

Malala graduated from Oxford with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Since then, she has continued her advocacy through the Malala Fund, working to ensure that every girl has the right to learn.
