Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority’s newly issued solar regulations and directed the Power Division to submit a formal review petition. The move comes amid growing concerns from existing solar consumers over potential changes to net metering terms and financial returns.

According to official sources, the Prime Minister has instructed authorities to ensure that the rights and existing contracts of current solar users remain protected. He emphasized that individuals and businesses who invested in solar energy under previous policies should not face unexpected losses due to regulatory adjustments.

At the same time, he stressed the need to prevent any additional financial burden on more than 37.6 million electricity consumers who rely solely on the national grid. Officials briefed the Prime Minister on the possible fiscal impact of revised solar buyback rates and cross subsidy structures.

During a high level meeting held in Islamabad, senior ministers and top officials reviewed the broader implications of the new framework. The Prime Minister called for a detailed and balanced action plan that maintains fairness between solar and non solar users while safeguarding the stability of the power sector.

The government’s review petition is expected to reassess key aspects of the regulations to ensure transparency, sustainability, and equitable cost distribution across all categories of electricity consumers. Further consultations are likely before a final decision is announced.
