Milestone in Space! Pakistan Sends Second Homegrown Satellite into Orbit

by Mahnoor Arif

Pakistan has successfully launched its second indigenous Earth Observation Satellite, EO 2, marking another key step in the country’s growing space program. The satellite was sent into orbit from China and was developed by SUPARCO, Pakistan’s national space agency.

EO 2 is designed to provide high resolution images to support a range of national needs. These include urban planning, climate monitoring, disaster management, agriculture assessment, and tracking of natural resources. With improved imaging capability and wider coverage, the satellite is expected to strengthen data collection across the country.

According to officials, EO 2 will help federal and provincial departments make more informed decisions. Accurate satellite imagery can assist in monitoring floods, drought conditions, land use changes, and infrastructure growth. It also plays a role in environmental protection by tracking deforestation, water bodies, and shifting weather patterns.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the scientists and engineers involved in the project, calling the launch a reflection of Pakistan’s technical progress. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also praised the team, highlighting the importance of local expertise in advancing national development.

The successful deployment of EO 2 signals Pakistan’s continued investment in space technology and self reliance. As satellite based data becomes increasingly important for economic planning and environmental management, EO 2 is expected to play a vital role in supporting sustainable growth across Pakistan.
