Sony Group Corporation has introduced a new technology designed to track the use of copyrighted music in AI generated songs. The tool aims to measure how much existing material may have influenced a newly created track, helping artists and rights holders protect their work.
Developed by Sony AI, the system analyzes audio patterns, melodies, and structural elements within songs. It can estimate the level of influence from well known artists and bands, including groups such as The Beatles and Queen. By identifying similarities, the technology may help determine whether an AI generated song closely mirrors copyrighted material.
The move comes as AI created music has grown rapidly online. Viral tracks that imitate the voices or styles of stars like Drake and The Weeknd have raised concerns about copyright protection and fair compensation. Rights holders argue that artists should receive royalties if their work significantly shapes AI outputs.
Sony also suggested that similar tools could be used to detect style copying in visual content, including works inspired by animation studios such as Studio Ghibli.
Although no official launch date has been announced, Sony hopes the technology will support future licensing agreements and create clearer standards for the responsible use of AI in music and creative industries.
