One Nation, One Identity! Govt Adds QR Code to National ID Cards

by Mahnoor Arif

The Government of Pakistan has introduced major upgrades to the National Identity Card system under its “One Nation, One Identity” initiative. The changes aim to improve security, reduce fraud, and create a single standard design for all citizens.

Under the new system, both the National Identity Card and the Pakistan Origin Card will include a QR code. This code will work as a legal verification feature and allow instant digital authentication. Officials say the QR code can be scanned to confirm a citizen’s identity quickly and safely.

The reforms are being implemented by the National Database and Registration Authority. Along with QR codes, the system now includes stronger biometric checks such as fingerprints and iris scans. These measures are designed to prevent identity theft and fake documents.

One major change is the removal of separate chip and non chip card formats. All citizens will now receive a uniform design. Senior citizens will be issued lifetime valid identity cards, which means they will not need repeated renewals. Residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and other special categories will also receive standardised cards under the new format.

Officials say the goal is to build digital trust and support future governance reforms. A stronger identity system can improve access to banking, voting, government services, and digital platforms.

Experts believe that modern identity infrastructure is essential for a growing digital economy. With these upgrades, Pakistan aims to create a more secure and efficient system for its citizens.
