PM Shehbaz Announces Plan to Reduce Govt Expenses

by Mahnoor Arif

Shehbaz Sharif has announced a nationwide plan to reduce government expenses as Pakistan faces rising fuel prices and economic pressure caused by global tensions. The measures are intended to lower public spending and manage limited financial resources more carefully.

One of the main steps is a 50 percent reduction in fuel allocations for government vehicles. The government has also decided to ground about 60 percent of the official vehicle fleet to reduce petrol and diesel consumption. Officials believe this will significantly lower fuel expenses across federal departments.

The plan also includes salary reductions for ministers and senior government officials as part of broader austerity measures. Authorities say the decision is meant to show that government leaders are also sharing the burden of economic challenges.

In addition, the government has approved a 20 percent cut in non development budgets across various ministries. These reductions will mainly affect administrative spending, while key development projects are expected to continue.

Another major change is the introduction of a four-day workweek for many government offices, with some departments shifting to remote work. The aim is to reduce electricity use, transportation costs, and operational expenses.

The government has indicated that further measures may be considered if economic conditions continue to remain difficult in the coming months.
