Pollen Reaches Dangerous Levels in Islamabad and Rawalpindi

by Mahnoor Arif

Pollen levels in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have reached dangerous levels, raising health concerns among residents. Experts have reported a sharp increase in eye allergies, especially during the current spring season.

Data from Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital shows that pollen concentration has crossed safe limits, making outdoor conditions difficult for many people.

In Islamabad’s H-8 sector, pollen levels have been recorded at over 14,000 particles per cubic meter. The main cause is paper mulberry, a plant known for releasing large amounts of pollen in the air. This pollen spreads quickly and can travel long distances, affecting a large population.

Doctors say many people are facing allergic conjunctivitis, which leads to red eyes, itching, watering, and sensitivity to light. In addition, a large number of residents also suffer from allergic rhinitis, which causes sneezing, a runny nose, and breathing discomfort.

Health experts advise people to take simple precautions. Wearing sunglasses outdoors can protect the eyes from pollen. Staying indoors during early morning and evening hours, when pollen levels are highest, can also help. Using air purifiers at home may reduce indoor exposure.

Warmer temperatures and less rainfall are increasing pollen production and extending the allergy season. This has become a growing public health issue, especially in urban areas like Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
