E-Challan Fines Reportedly Issued to Welfare Ambulances in Karachi

by Mahnoor Arif

Welfare ambulances in Karachi are facing a serious problem after receiving dozens of e-challan fines. Major organisations like the Edhi Foundation and Chhipa Foundation have been issued more than 50 e-challans together.

The total fine amount has reached hundreds of thousands of rupees. Even the government-run Rescue 1122 service received fines, mostly for seat belt violations.

These welfare groups provide free emergency services across the city. Their ambulances rush to save lives every day, often in heavy traffic. Officials from these organisations say drivers focus first on reaching patients quickly.

Strict traffic rules, such as wearing seat belts, become difficult to follow during real emergencies. Many fines were issued through Safe City cameras.

The lack of dedicated emergency lanes in Karachi makes the situation worse. Ambulances often have to move through normal traffic, increasing the chance of violations.

In many countries around the world, emergency vehicles are usually exempt from such penalties when responding to urgent calls.

Representatives of Edhi and Chhipa have appealed to the Sindh government and traffic police to review the e-challan system for ambulances. They argue that fining life-saving vehicles hurts the organisations that serve the poor and needy without any charge.

Traffic authorities have not yet commented officially. The issue has sparked concern among relief workers who fear that heavy fines could affect their ability to provide quick help.

Many citizens and social workers are demanding special rules to protect emergency services in Karachi.
