Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon inaugurated Karachi’s new Electric Vehicle (EV) Taxi project on April 1, 2026. The initiative is a joint effort between the Sindh government, Sindh Bank, Sindh Development Fund (SDF), and the Sindh Mass Transit Authority.

The main goal of the project is to promote eco-friendly transport in Karachi, reduce air pollution, and improve urban mobility. It will also create new job opportunities for young people in the province.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Sharjeel Memon said the government is focused on modern and green transport solutions. He highlighted special women-focused projects, including the popular Pink Bus service and Pink EV scooters. These initiatives aim to give women safer and easier travel options.

More than 20,000 women have already applied for driving licenses under these schemes. The government is providing free training to help them become drivers and earn a living.

Memon urged local industrialists to invest in electric vehicle manufacturing. He specially mentioned the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone as an ideal place for setting up EV plants. He said Pakistan needs to move towards sustainable transport to reduce dependence on imported fuel and protect the environment.

The EV Taxi project is seen as an important step towards cleaner and smarter mobility in Sindh. Officials believe it will bring positive changes for both the environment and the people of Karachi.
