Punjab Aims to Run 5000 Electric Buses over Next Five Years

by urooj Fatima

The Punjab government has announced an ambitious plan to introduce 5,000 electric buses across the province over the next five years as part of its push for cleaner and more modern public transport.

The announcement was made by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department in Lahore. She said the project is designed to improve travel for commuters while reducing air pollution and fuel consumption.

According to officials, the first phase of the project will see 1,500 electric buses operating in 91 tehsils across Punjab. Around 189 buses are already ready for launch, while another 488 buses are expected to arrive from China later this month.

The province has also started assembling electric buses locally, marking a step forward for Pakistan’s growing electric vehicle industry.

The government also plans to expand other eco-friendly transport options, including electric taxis, e-bikes and electric three-wheelers. Officials believe these initiatives will make public transport more accessible while supporting a cleaner environment.

The electric bus programme is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters by providing quieter, more comfortable and environmentally friendly travel.

It is also part of the Punjab government’s broader effort to modernize transport infrastructure across the province.
