Pakistan is expected to launch the first phase of the $10 billion Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project next year, marking a major step toward modernising the country’s rail network.

The ML-1 project is the largest railway upgrade planned under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It aims to rebuild and improve the railway line connecting Karachi and Peshawar, making train travel faster, safer, and more efficient.

The initial phase will focus on upgrading key sections of the railway track, improving signalling systems, and enhancing passenger and freight services. Once completed, trains are expected to operate at significantly higher speeds while reducing travel times.

Officials say the project will strengthen trade, improve cargo transportation, and create thousands of jobs during construction. It is also expected to boost economic activity by improving connectivity between major cities and industrial hubs.

Pakistan has been working with China to finalise financing and technical arrangements for the long-awaited project. The government believes the ML-1 upgrade will play an important role in transforming the country’s transport infrastructure and supporting future economic growth.
