Pakistan has secured safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for Qatar liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, providing relief amid concerns over disruptions to the country’s energy supplies.
According to reports, Pakistan negotiated with Iran to facilitate the transit of at least one Qatar LNG cargo through the strategically important waterway. The arrangement comes as Pakistan continues to depend heavily on Qatar for LNG supplies used to meet its energy requirements.
The development is particularly important because the Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy shipments, and disruptions in the waterway have created uncertainty for countries importing oil and LNG from the Gulf.
Earlier, Iranian authorities had approved the passage of Qatar LNG tankers heading toward Pakistan. The Al Kharaitiyat became the first Qatar LNG carrier to cross the strait since the conflict began, carrying gas toward Pakistan’s Port Qasim. A second vessel, Mihzem, also subsequently made the journey under arrangements involving Iran and Pakistan.
Pakistan’s agreement with Iran is aimed at keeping essential LNG supplies moving despite the difficult security situation around Hormuz. The country has faced pressure on its energy system as disruptions to LNG deliveries have raised concerns about gas availability, particularly during periods of high electricity demand.
The arrangement also highlights the importance of Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement with Iran during the regional crisis. Reports indicate that the transit agreements were negotiated between Islamabad and Tehran, while Qatar was not directly involved in those bilateral arrangements.
For Pakistan, ensuring the continued arrival of Qatar LNG could help support electricity generation, maintain gas supplies and reduce pressure on the domestic energy sector.
The development gives Pakistan’s energy security a short-term boost, amid ongoing uncertainty over commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
