The Chinese pickup truck BYD Shark 6 is now challenging the long dominance of the Toyota Hilux in Pakistan. Toyota Indus Motor Company has admitted that the new BYD Shark 6 is putting pressure on Hilux sales, especially in urban markets. However, demand for Hilux remains steady in rural areas where it is still preferred for tough work.
During its recent corporate briefing on May 12, 2026, Toyota Indus reported strong growth in Fortuner sales, which nearly doubled compared to last year. The company explained that recent price reductions on its vehicles were due to government tax cuts and increased localisation efforts, not because of discounts.
Toyota is gradually shifting its focus toward hybrid vehicles before moving fully to electric cars. The company also confirmed it will continue investing in local manufacturing in Pakistan. Despite rising competition from Chinese brands, Toyota still holds more than 50% market share in most segments. Many customers who tried other brands are returning to Toyota, trusting its reliability and after-sales service.
The arrival of modern hybrid pickups like the BYD Shark 6 shows how fast the Pakistani auto market is changing. While the 56-year-old Hilux legend remains strong, newer and more advanced options are now giving tough competition.
