President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the Sitara-e-Shujaat award for Liaqat Shaheed, a brave retired Pakistan Railways employee who sacrificed his life to stop a suicide bomber. The prestigious gallantry award will be presented to his mother, son, and brother in recognition of his extraordinary courage.

The incident occurred on May 11, 2026, near the inter-provincial border between Attock (Punjab) and Kohat (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), close to Khushal Garh Bridge and Jand tehsil. Liaqat Shaheed noticed a suspicious man heading towards a security checkpoint through agricultural fields. He bravely confronted the suspect and asked for identification. The attacker then detonated his explosive vest, killing both Liaqat and himself.

By stopping the bomber, Liaqat prevented what could have been a major tragedy and saved many lives. His quick action and sacrifice have been widely praised across the country. He was given a state funeral with full honours.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recommended the award, and President Zardari approved it on May 13. Officials described Liaqat as a true hero and a shining example of patriotism. His act of bravery has reminded the nation of the courage shown by ordinary citizens in the fight against terrorism.

This award honours not only Liaqat Shaheed’s sacrifice but also highlights the spirit of selfless service for Pakistan.
