Pakistan has significantly strengthened its military cooperation with Saudi Arabia by deploying around 8,000 troops, a squadron of fighter jets, and an advanced air defence system to the Kingdom.
According to reports, the deployment includes approximately 16 JF-17 fighter jets (jointly developed with China), two squadrons of drones, and a Chinese HQ-9 air defence system. Saudi Arabia is fully financing the operation, while Pakistani personnel are operating all the equipment. This move comes under a mutual defence pact signed between the two countries last year.
The deployment is aimed at bolstering Saudi Arabia’s defence capabilities amid rising regional tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Interestingly, Pakistan continues to play a key role as a mediator in the Iran-related tensions while simultaneously supporting Saudi Arabia militarily.
This is not the first time Pakistan has sent military support to Saudi Arabia. Pakistani troops and jets have been deployed there in the past to help secure the Kingdom’s borders and strategic installations.
Defence analysts say the latest deployment reflects the deep strategic and military partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. It also highlights Pakistan’s growing importance in regional security matters.
