Govt Rejects Rumors of Raising Voting Age to 25 Under 28th Amendment

by Mahnoor Arif

The federal government has strongly rejected rumors suggesting that it plans to raise the voting age from 18 to 25 as part of the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment.

Information Minister Atta Tarar clarified that there is no truth to these reports. He stated that no such proposal exists in any official draft or discussion. He further said that the government does not consider it necessary to respond to every unverified rumor circulating in the media and on social media.

The speculation started after Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah made some comments about possible constitutional changes. These remarks were misunderstood and quickly spread, creating political debate and public concern, especially among young voters.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also dismissed the rumors. He confirmed that the government is not considering any proposal to increase the voting age. He added that any constitutional amendment requires broad political consensus and cannot be done without proper consultation with all stakeholders.

The clarification has brought relief to many young Pakistanis who were worried about losing their right to vote. The government has urged people not to believe in fake news and to rely only on official statements regarding important national matters.
