The United States has approved a potential $800 million military sale to Iraq, including Bell helicopters and a wide range of weapons, sensors and support equipment. The proposed deal was approved by the US State Department on August 31, 2026.
The package includes Bell 412EPX utility helicopters and Bell 407M tactical helicopters, although the exact number of aircraft has not been publicly specified. The proposed equipment is designed to strengthen Iraq’s transport, reconnaissance and air-to-surface targeting capabilities.
The deal also includes GAU-19 machine guns, M260 rocket launchers, advanced electro-optical and infrared sensors, missile-warning systems and secure communications equipment. Spare parts, ground-support equipment, technical documentation and training for Iraqi personnel are also included.
According to US officials, the proposed sale would help strengthen Iraq’s ability to respond to current and future security threats while supporting Washington’s broader security relationship with Baghdad.
Bell-Textron, based in Fort Worth, Texas, has been identified as the principal contractor for the proposed Foreign Military Sale.
However, the announcement represents approval of a possible sale rather than a completed contract. The final value, equipment package and delivery arrangements could change during negotiations.
The proposed deal comes as Iraq continues to take greater responsibility for its own security and modernize its military capabilities. The $800 million package could significantly enhance Iraq’s helicopter fleet and battlefield support capabilities if finalized.
