PIA Comeback? Pakistan, UK Discuss Airbus Aircraft and Rolls-Royce Engines

by urooj Fatima

Pakistan and the United Kingdom have discussed possible aviation arrangements involving Airbus aircraft and Rolls-Royce engines for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), as the national carrier works to modernise its fleet and expand international operations.

The discussions took place during a meeting between Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and British High Commissioner Jane Marriott in Islamabad on October 8, 2026. The British side briefed Pakistan on potential aircraft and engine arrangements, along with possible UK export-credit support.

Aircraft leasing was also discussed as an option to meet PIA’s immediate fleet requirements, while longer-term aircraft procurement is considered.

The development comes as PIA seeks to rebuild its international network following the resumption of flights to the UK and Europe. The airline is also preparing to increase London services to seven flights per week from October 27.

Pakistan has simultaneously been exploring options with Boeing, including potential Boeing 787 Dreamliner purchases and interim leasing arrangements. This means PIA is currently considering multiple aircraft and financing options rather than having finalised a specific Airbus or Rolls-Royce order.

Jam Kamal said PIA’s direct international routes remain an important commercial asset and stressed that improved service quality, reliable operations and fleet modernisation would be essential to rebuilding passenger confidence.

The talks could form part of PIA’s broader comeback strategy as the airline seeks newer aircraft, stronger international connectivity and improved operational reliability.
