A shepherd from Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghizer district, Wasiat Khan, has been praised as a true hero after saving nearly 200 lives during a dangerous glacier burst in the Tali Das area.
When Khan noticed the glacier breaking apart, he quickly understood the threat. Without wasting any time, he rushed to warn the nearby villagers. His alert call allowed families to leave their homes and move to higher ground before powerful floodwaters swept through the valley.
The sudden disaster, known as a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), destroyed several houses, damaged farmland, and submerged entire villages under water. Roads and bridges were also badly affected. Despite the destruction, no lives were lost—thanks to Wasiat Khan’s quick action and presence of mind.
Local authorities recognized his courage by awarding him with a cash prize and a certificate of appreciation. For many, Khan’s bravery serves as an example of how one person’s awareness and quick thinking can save an entire community.
Meanwhile, rescue and relief teams remain on high alert. Heavy machinery has been deployed as landslides have blocked the Gilgit–Shandur Road, cutting off transport routes. Rising water levels continue to threaten other settlements in the area, making the situation dangerous for those living nearby.
Officials have urged residents to stay cautious, avoid traveling to risky zones, and report any early signs of natural hazards. The incident highlights both the increasing threat of climate-related disasters in northern Pakistan and the importance of community vigilance.
For the people of Ghizer, Wasiat Khan will always be remembered as the shepherd who saved hundreds of lives.
