In a major boost to twin-city connectivity, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced a 25-kilometre signal-free corridor stretching from Islamabad Expressway to Peshawar Road in Rawalpindi. The Rs30 billion project, approved on November 19, 2025, includes nine underpasses and three flyovers designed to eliminate traffic bottlenecks and cut travel time significantly.
Speaking at a high-level meeting in Lahore, the CM directed authorities to start construction immediately, setting an ambitious deadline of April 2026 for completion. “This corridor will transform daily commuting between Islamabad and Rawalpindi,” she said, adding that the route will benefit thousands of residents, students, and office-goers who face hours-long delays daily.
The announcement is part of Punjab government’s aggressive infrastructure push in Rawalpindi, often called the “neglected twin” of Islamabad. Maryam Nawaz praised her uncle, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, for laying the foundation of mega projects during his previous tenures, stating, “Rawalpindi is witnessing unprecedented development under PML-N leadership.”
Local traders and commuters welcomed the move, with many calling it a “game-changer” for the garrison city. The project will also complement ongoing work on the Rawalpindi Ring Road and Leh Expressway. Officials say detailed designs are ready, and land acquisition issues have been resolved to ensure smooth execution.
With work set to begin within days, residents hope the signal-free corridor will finally end years of traffic misery on one of Pakistan’s busiest routes.
