Big Change! Punjab Schools to Operate Only 2 Hours a Day This Winter

by Mahnoor Arif

Punjab has introduced a major change to school schedules for the upcoming winter season, aiming to protect students from harsh weather conditions while ensuring academic activities continue smoothly.

The Punjab Education Initiatives Management Authority has officially released the mid-term School-Based Assessment (SBA) dates for Grades 1 to 8. The assessments will begin on 12 December 2025, marking an important phase of the academic calendar.

Along with the assessment schedule, the government has announced new winter timings for all schools across the province. Under the revised plan, schools will operate for only two hours a day.

  • Morning session: 9:30 am to 11:30 am
  • Afternoon session: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

This adjustment provides flexibility for students and teachers while helping them avoid the coldest hours of the day. The shorter timetable is expected to reduce absenteeism and health-related issues during the winter months.

The government has also finalized the winter vacation schedule. Schools will remain closed from 23 December 2025 to 10 January 2026. Classes will resume on 13 January 2026, allowing students and teachers to return refreshed after the extended break.

Parents and school administrations have welcomed the decision, stating that shorter hours during extreme weather are a practical and student-friendly approach.

Overall, these changes reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring learning continues without compromising student well-being. Punjab’s schools are now preparing to smoothly transition into the new winter schedule.
