by Mahnoor Arif

Lahore is set to receive one of Pakistan’s largest and most advanced cancer treatment centers as the Punjab government continues work on the 915-bed Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and Research.

The project, costing Rs72 billion, is being built with round-the-clock effort to ensure early completion and faster access to quality healthcare for thousands of patients.

During the 7th Board of Governors meeting, chaired by Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique and Board Chairman Capt (R) Zahid Saeed, officials reviewed the institute’s progress in detail. The meeting focused on construction updates, hiring plans, procurement, and deadlines for each stage of the project.

The board approved a six-point agenda that included new HR regulations, improvements in nursing facilities, and updates on administrative blocks.

The upcoming institute aims to be a fully paperless, modern cancer hospital equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment technology. The facility will include specialized wards, research units, and training centers for medical professionals. Its purpose is not only to offer treatment but also to support research that can help improve cancer care across Punjab.

Authorities stressed the importance of completing Phase 1 on time so that the hospital can begin its operations as soon as possible. Once functional, the institute is expected to ease the burden on existing hospitals and provide affordable, high-quality cancer treatment to patients who often struggle with long waiting lists and high medical costs.

The project represents a major step toward strengthening Punjab’s healthcare system and expanding access to life-saving cancer treatment for thousands of families.
