Quaid-e-Azam Directed the Establishment of PIA, Pakistan’s International Airline Before Pakistan Was Born

Long before Pakistan emerged as an independent state, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah clearly understood the importance of strong national institutions. In June 1946, more than a year before independence, he directed prominent industrialist Mirza Ahmad Ispahani to establish a national airline for the future country. This decision highlights Jinnah’s foresight and careful planning for Pakistan’s long term needs.

At the time, Pakistan existed only as an idea, yet Jinnah identified air travel as a top priority. One of his key concerns was the geographical challenge Pakistan would face after independence. The country’s two wings, East Pakistan and West Pakistan, were separated by nearly 1,100 miles of Indian territory. Jinnah believed that a fast and reliable air transport system was essential to keep the nation connected and united.

Following Jinnah’s directive, Orient Airways was established in October 1946, becoming the foundation of what would later evolve into Pakistan International Airlines. After independence in 1947, the airline played a crucial role in linking the two wings of the country and supporting trade, governance, and national integration.

Shows Jinnah’s leadership went beyond political struggle. He focused on practical steps to ensure Pakistan could function as a modern state. His emphasis on aviation reflected his understanding of technology, mobility, and national cohesion.

Today, this early vision stands as an important chapter in Pakistan’s history. The establishment of a national airline before the country’s birth remains a powerful example of strategic thinking and institution-building by Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
