Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced that from January 1, no vehicle will be allowed to enter Islamabad without an M Tag. The decision is part of broader efforts to improve traffic control, public safety, and security monitoring in the federal capital.

The announcement was made during a high level meeting at the Safe City Headquarters, where the interior minister reviewed existing security arrangements and ongoing public safety projects. Mohsin Naqvi directed concerned authorities to speed up work aimed at transforming Islamabad into Pakistan’s first fully functional smart city.

According to officials, the mandatory M Tag system will help regulate vehicle movement at entry and exit points of the city. It will also improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and support better identification of vehicles through digital monitoring. Authorities believe this step will strengthen overall security and assist law enforcement agencies in real time tracking.

During his visit, Mohsin Naqvi also inspected surveillance facilities, including the Chinese desk monitoring system used under the Safe City project. He expressed satisfaction with the technological infrastructure and stressed the need for further improvements to ensure effective urban management.

The interior minister instructed officials to finalize a comprehensive plan to enhance Safe City initiatives across Islamabad. This includes expanding surveillance coverage, integrating traffic management systems, and improving coordination among relevant departments.

Citizens have been advised to install M Tags on their vehicles before January 1 to avoid inconvenience. The government hopes the policy will set a model for other major cities, promoting smarter governance, safer roads, and more efficient use of technology in urban planning.
