Supermoon to Light Up Pakistan Skies Today and Tomorrow

by Mahnoor Arif

Skywatchers across Pakistan are in for a rare and beautiful sight as the first supermoon of 2026, known as the Wolf Moon, lights up the night sky on January 3 and 4. According to the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), this celestial event will be visible throughout the country, offering a brighter and larger view of the full moon.

A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its full phase while being closest to Earth in its orbit. This makes it appear noticeably bigger and up to 30 percent brighter than a regular full moon. On January 3, the moon will rise at around 5:51 pm with near full illumination and will remain visible through the night and into the following evening.

Experts say the best time to observe the supermoon is during moonrise and moonset, when the moon appears especially large near the horizon. Clear skies will provide the best viewing experience, and observers are advised to look for open areas away from city lights for a clearer view.

Adding to the excitement, the supermoon will coincide with the annual Quadrantids meteor shower, one of the strongest meteor showers of the year. This rare alignment means viewers may also spot shooting stars streaking across the sky, making the night even more special for astronomy lovers.

Suparco has encouraged the public to enjoy this natural event, calling it a great opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about space. The Wolf Moon has cultural significance in many traditions and marks the first full moon of the new year.

This two night spectacle promises a memorable start to 2026 for people across Pakistan who look up to the skies.
