The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has approved the issuance of lifetime official passports for Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) and their spouses, marking a significant policy change aimed at facilitating official travel. The decision was taken during a provincial cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.
Under the new policy, eligible MPAs and their spouses will be entitled to official passports that remain valid for life, eliminating the need for repeated renewals during or after their tenure. Provincial officials said the move is intended to simplify travel arrangements for lawmakers who may be required to represent the province at official meetings, conferences, and international engagements.
The cabinet also discussed the administrative framework for implementing the decision. Relevant departments have been directed to coordinate with federal authorities to ensure the smooth processing and issuance of the passports in accordance with existing regulations.
Supporters of the initiative argue that the policy will reduce administrative delays and provide greater convenience for elected representatives carrying out official responsibilities. They say similar facilities are available to certain categories of public office holders and government officials.
However, the decision has also sparked public debate, with critics questioning whether extending the privilege to spouses is necessary at a time when the country faces economic challenges. Some observers have called for greater transparency regarding the eligibility criteria and financial implications of the policy.
Despite the differing opinions, the provincial government has defended the move, stating that it is designed to improve administrative efficiency rather than provide a personal benefit. Officials maintain that the passports will be used in accordance with applicable rules governing official travel.
The announcement is expected to remain a topic of public and political discussion as details of the policy’s implementation emerge in the coming weeks.
