Special 5-Day Holiday Announced for Lahore Ahead of Basant Celebrations

by Mahnoor Arif

The government has announced a special five day holiday for Lahore from February 4 to February 8, giving residents a rare extended break to observe national and cultural events. The holiday combines religious observance, national solidarity, and the city’s much loved Basant festival.

The break will begin on February 4 with Shab e Barat, a night of prayers and reflection for Muslims across the country. February 5 will be observed as Youm e Kashmir, a national day marked to show solidarity with the people of Kashmir. Both days are already recognized as important national observances.

From February 6 to February 8, Lahore will celebrate Basant, the traditional kite flying festival that marks the arrival of spring. The city is expected to come alive with colorful kites, rooftop gatherings, music, and cultural activities. Basant has long been a symbol of Lahore’s vibrant culture and festive spirit.

During the five day holiday, schools, colleges, and government offices in Lahore will remain closed. Authorities have stressed that strict safety measures will be enforced during Basant to prevent accidents. The use of unsafe kite strings and reckless kite flying will be closely monitored.

Local organizers are planning controlled and family friendly events, including kite flying competitions, cultural shows, and community programs. Security and emergency services will remain on alert throughout the celebrations.

Residents have welcomed the announcement, saying the extended holiday offers a chance to enjoy traditions, spend time with family, and relax. Many see it as a positive step toward promoting Lahore’s cultural identity while ensuring public safety.
