Saudi Arabia Bans Outdoor Loudspeakers for Prayers During Ramadan

by Mahnoor Arif

Saudi Arabia has confirmed a ban on the use of outdoor loudspeakers for prayers during the holy month of Ramadan, except for the call to prayer (adhan) and the iqama. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs as part of updated mosque guidelines for Ramadan.

According to the ministry, mosques are no longer allowed to broadcast full prayers, sermons, or supplications through external speakers. Only the adhan and iqama may be played outside, while all other prayers must remain within the mosque premises. The decision aims to reduce noise disturbance and ensure a peaceful atmosphere for both worshippers and nearby residents.

The guidelines also stress strict adherence to official prayer timings based on the Umm Al Qura calendar. Mosque authorities have been instructed to follow these timings carefully to maintain consistency across the Kingdom during Ramadan.

In addition, the ministry has issued clear rules regarding iftar arrangements. Communal iftar meals must only be organized in designated areas approved by local authorities. This is to ensure proper cleanliness, safety, and crowd management.

Special attention has also been given to mosque facilities. The ministry has directed mosque administrations to maintain clean and safe environments, including well managed women’s prayer areas. Hygiene, ventilation, and overall upkeep are being emphasized to accommodate the large number of worshippers during Ramadan.

Officials say these measures are meant to create a calm and spiritually focused environment while respecting the comfort of surrounding communities. The policy reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to balance religious practices with public convenience during the sacred month of Ramadan.
