The Government of Punjab has launched its first electric taxi program to promote clean transport and create new job opportunities. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the initiative as part of efforts to reduce pollution and support women’s participation in the workforce.
In the first phase, 1,100 electric taxis will be distributed across major cities. The program includes a 30 percent quota for women drivers. These vehicles will have a distinct color so passengers can easily identify taxis driven by women.
Under the scheme, the government will pay 50 percent of the upfront cost for male applicants and 60 percent for female applicants. It will also cover registration fees, fitness certificates, and token tax. The remaining amount can be paid in easy installments over five years, making the program more affordable for drivers.
The vehicles will be equipped with safety features, including panic buttons linked to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority. This system will help ensure quick response in case of emergencies. The taxis will operate through ride hailing platforms such as inDrive and Yango, and will support digital payments.
The government also plans to expand fast charging stations to support the growing number of electric vehicles. Officials say the program will reduce fuel costs, cut emissions, and encourage women to join the transport sector.
