Palest!nians Vote in Local Elections for First Time in 20 Years

by Mahnoor Arif

Palestine has held local elections in parts of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, marking the first municipal vote in Gaza in nearly 20 years. The elections are seen as a limited but notable step in restoring local governance under difficult conditions.

Polling in Deir el-Balah was described as a pilot phase due to widespread damage in the area. Many public facilities and infrastructure have been affected, making it challenging to organize full-scale elections. Despite this, local officials moved forward to test the process.

In the West Bank, close to one million voters took part in choosing representatives for municipal councils. These councils are responsible for basic services such as water supply, waste management, and local development. Voter turnout reflects continued public interest in local governance, even as larger political issues remain unresolved.

The elections come at a time of ongoing political division. Hamas did not participate, while most candidates were linked to Fatah or ran as independents. National elections have not been held since 2006, adding to public frustration.

Officials say the goal of these local polls is to reconnect Gaza and the West Bank politically, though major challenges remain.
